Face, Relevance and Their Integration

Mou Xiao-mei, MA Student of English Linguistics, School of Foreign Languages, Ocean University of China, Qindao, Shandong Province, 266071
Neither the latest face model nor the relevance theory is adequate in explaining communication phenomenon. Face emphasizes the social dimension of communication, ignoring the psychological dimension; and relevance theory emphasizes the psychological dimension, ignoring the social and cultural dimension of communication. However, face and relevance are complementary to each other and can be integrated. The integration of the two explains communication more effectively.
