The Utilization of the Cooperative Principle and the Politeness Principle in Austen's Emma

Emma is a typical novel written by Jane Austen which depicts British women in the 19th century. In this article certain pragmatic theories like the Cooperative Principle(abbr. CP), the Politeness Principle ( abbr. PP) will be employed to analyze Emma's speech with others, aiming at discovering their different characters and furthermore exploiting the fact that the integration of CP and PP is considered as a primary method to organize conversation.
