Synthesis by sol-gel combustion method and gas sensing property of MgFe_2O_4 nanoparticles

NIU Xin-shu, LI Hua (College of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Henan Normal University, Henan Province Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Control, Xinxiang 453007, Henan Province, China)  
MgFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel combustion method with Mg(NO3)2、Fe(NO3)3 and citric acid as the starting materials. Its structure and morphology were characterized and measured by XRD, TEM and IR spectra techniques. The results show the MgFe2O4 nanoparticles with a particle size less than 20 nm can be obtained after combustion of MgFe2O4 precursor and heat treatment (500 ℃, 1 h). The sensor based on MgFe2O4 has higher sensitivity (177) to 50×10–6 Cl2 at 4.5 V. The response time is 4 s, moreover its selectivity is also good. It can be expected to be a potential gas sensing material to Cl2.
