FEATURES OF ACTIVE TECTONICS AND RECURRENCE BEHAVIORS OF STRONG EARTHQUAKES IN THE WESTERN SICHUAN PROVINCE AND ITS ADJACENT REGIONS

There exist several groups of seismogenic active faults at the conjoined areas of the Chuandian, Bayankala and Huanan active blocks along the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Owing to existence of transverse secondary active faults, the Chuandian Block can be further divided into the Middle Yunnan and Northwestern Sichuan sub-blocks, and the Longmenshan sub-block at the easternmost end of the Bayankala Block. Joint exploration of the crustal structure shows that low-velocity layers exist in the crust of the Chuandian and Bayankala Blocks. These low velocity layers correspond also to high conducting layers and they are the cause of frequent earthquake occurrence in the upper crust. Geologic study and GPS surveying indicate that the tectonic motion of the blocks in this region is accounted to be a complex or superimposition of three basic types of motions: southeastward sliding, rotating on vertical axis, and uplifting, but there is difference in the geologic slip rate and GPS rate. Besides, this paper collects the database of the geologic slip rates and GPS slip rates for the active faults in the region and major scientific problems are also discussed at last.

9 JIANG Hai-kun LI Ming-xiao WU Qiong SONG Jin (China Earthquake Network Center,Beijing 100045,China) Aftershock activity of May 12 M 8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake sequence shows an obvious segmented feature,most of the large aftershocks are distributed in the south and north parts of aftershock zone.Thrusting is dominant in the south part with a small strike slip component.The aftershock activity decays gradually and presents the sequence feature of mainshock-aftershock pattern.The north part is the ending area of the mainshock fracture,where the strike slipping is dominant and shows an obvious swarm feature,it therefore became the major area for large aftershocks.Modulation of earth tide on aftershock activity is remarkable,most of large aftershocks occur during the period of flood and neap tide.The time period around 16: 00 is the dominant occurring time for large aftershocks.The p-value,a parameter of modified Omori formula,increases gradually with time,and reaches about 1 in the final.Based on the previous study,the sequence patterns,magnitude of maximum aftershock,as well as the duration of aftershock activity have been discussed.The primary results also show that the magnitude difference between mainshock and the maximum aftershock is proportional to the rupture size of the mainshock for huge earthquakes of about M8.0.This means that,when the magnitudes of earthquakes are nearly the same,large rupture size corresponds to the sufficient energy release. the May 12th M 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake,segmentation features,sequence pattern,magnitude of maximum aftershock,duration of aftershock activity,rupture size;FEATURES OF THE MAY 12 M8.0 WENCHUAN EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE AND DISCUSSION ON RELEVANT PROBLEMS[J];Seismology and Geology;2008-03
