PALEOMAGNETIC EVIDENCE OF CENOZOIC MOSAIC STRUCTURE ALONG YANGTZE AND SOUTH CHINA

Wang Runhua Xue Hu ( Nanjing Geology Research Ihstitute )
Based on paleomagnetic data, the evolution of the lower Yangtze block has been studied. As a result of our study, the authors discovered that since late paleozoic the lower Yangtze block has been subjected to a series of complicated tectonic movements. In late paleozoic the lower Yangtze block was in lower latitude as a part of south China block. At the begining of Triassic the lower Yangtze Sheet-body separated from south China block near the equator, becoming the isolated lower Yangtze block in Triassic. In late Jurassic-early Cretaceous it rapidly moved towords north and ducked into north China block in the midlatitude area, becoming a part of north China block. Since late Early Tertiary ( E3 ) the lower Yangtze sheet-body in combination with north China block began to move toward south and finally collided with South China block in the later period of late Tertiary, forming the unified continental block of east China. After analyzing the geological features, the authors suggest that since Mesozoic the lower Yangtze block joined north China block and south China block not by deep fault Shearing but rather by means of thin-skinned structure.
