EFFECTIVE ELASTIC THICKNESS OF CONTINENTAL LITHOSPHERE AND ITS GEODYNAMICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Jiao Shuqiang Jin Zhenming(Faculty of Earth Sciences, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, 430074)
This paper reviews the study of the effective elastic thickness of continental lithosphere and discusses primarily its geodynamical significance. The "Te" of the continental lithosphere is controlled not only by its thermal structure as in the case of the oceanic lithosphere, but also in conjunction with two other equally important complementary mechanisms: (1) the strength reduction of crust-mantle decoupling and (2) the presence of the surface and subsurface loads. Therefore "Te" reflects a current dynamic balance among the topography, plate boundary forces, and lithospheric structure.
