The paper discusses 3 key problems about regional geological surveying in the small "red basin" of South China: mapping units,micro-lithofacies and basin-marginal faults. It states that the analysis of sedimentary environments and micro-lithofacies are foundational for the red basin study and the subdivision of mapping units. Then it summarizes 23 micro-lithofacies through the red basin study in Southeast Hubei and Northwest Jiangxi. The research of micro-lithofacies,sedimentary association and paleocurrent direction has subdivided the originally simple lithostratigraphic units through the identification of alluvial fans and classification of sedimentary units of alluvial fans. This has enriched the contents of images and is of great significance for reconstruct paleoenvironment and evolvement process of the "red basin".Furthermore, the analysis of basin-marginal faults provides direct geological evidence for the formation, evolvement and late-stage modification of the "red basin".
