Synthesis of Zwitterionic AM/AMPS Copolymer as Filtrate Reducer for Drilling Fluid by Hofmann Reaction

A kind of new zwitterionic copolymer was synthesised by using acrylamide(AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonicacid(AMPS) as monomer.The process includes two steps: free radical copolymerization in water solution and partially Hofmann degradation.The paper discussed the effect of different reaction conditions on property of the product,characterized the coppolymer by IR,determinated the substitution(-NH+3) degree of the coppolymer by colloid titration,and evaluated the properties of mud containing the copolymer in laboratory.The experimental results show that zwitterionic AM/AMPS copolymer had very good capacity of depressing filter loss,heat resistance and salt tolerance.
