This paper discusses the application of SEM type DX-3A made in China for study of clay minerals.We have obtained some good photographs of kaolinite, Halloysite, illite and montmorillo-nite from clay specimens.Characteristic microforms of these clay minerals are shown in these photographs.In addition, the relationship between the microforms and their crystal structure, chemical composition an'd mechanism of formation are studied.The studies of the microforms of clay minerals and the state of aggregation have not only theoretically importance but also practical applications for example to study of the effect on the engineering and technical properties of clays.It is shown that crude materials of clays can be studied directly using high resolution SEM to obtain details of the microform of clay minerals.SEM combined with other methods will play an important role in study of clay mineralogy.
