CRITICAL EXAMINATION ON CONTINENTAL COLLISION TECTONICS

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part analysed the geological characteristics of ophiolite belts distributed on the Tibetan Plateau, and concluded that these ophiolites represent the infant oceanic crust in intra-continental rift environment but not an intercontinental suture. The second part discussed the tectonic features and the mountain building mechanisms of Himalaya range, and considered the using the Himalaya mountain range as a prototype of the collisioned mountain belt has no geological basis and can not be proved by successive geological observation. The conclusion is that the so-called collisional mountain belt doesn't exist or has never been seen in contInent.
