THE ADVANCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY IN THE STUDY OF PAST GLOBAL CHANGE

Past Global Change (PAGES) is one of the IGBP Core Projects aimed at providing a quantitative understanding of the Earth′s past environment changes,defining the envelope of natural environmental variability and assessing anthropogenic impact on the Earth's biosphere, geosphere and atmosphere. Isotope geochemistry is considered a cornerstone of PAGES science. Firstl, isotope-dating methods are of high accuracy for reconstructing the chronology of various climate records. Secondly, isotope composition is widely used by the paleo-community on a large variety of records as reliable climate indicators and its role in quantitative estimates of paleoclimates worthy particularly to be mentioned. In this paper, some most prominent recent advances of geochemical researches in the PAGES science are presented, in both spatial and temporal aspects. Moreover, the roles of isotope studies in the identification of potential climate forcing are also summarized.
