THE ZIRCON U-Pb AGE OF METAMORPHOSED BASIC VOLCANIC LAVAS FROM THE HUTUO GROUP IN THE WUTAI MOUNTAIN AREA, SHANXI PROVINCE

The Liudingsi metamorphosed basic volcanic lavas of the Qingshicun Formation of the early Proterozoic Hutuo Group are represented by tholeiites, which are thick bedded and show clearly nodular and tubular blastovesicular filling and pillow structures. They were the product of volcanic eruption in the early stage of the formation of the Hutuo Group. The lava layer is fresh; although it underwent lower greenschist facies regional metamorphism, the blastotholeiitic texture and blastointergranular texture have been still preserved. The chemistry of the lavas and the geological environment of their formation indicate that the Liudingsi metamorphosed basic volcanic lavas belong to continental basalts. Zircon with a well-defined crystal form and good transparency was separated from the lava samples and divided mto five groups according to its grain size. The measurements provided a concordia age of 2366_(-93)~(+103)Ma. It is interpreted as represnting the formative age of the metamorpho- sed basic volcanic lavas of the Hutuo Group. This result has provided better evidence for the formative age of the Hutuo Group, enabled the long-standing problem of the age of the Hutuo Group to be solved basically, and filled the gap in the early Precambrian geologic time scale of the Taihang-Wutai Mountains area.
