~(40)Ar/~(39)Ar Dating for the Azubai Rare Metal-gem Deposit in Altay, Xinjiang——New Evidence for Yanshanian Mineralization of Rare Metals

The Altaides is one of the most important regions of pegmatite-related mineral resources in China, even throughout the world. A lot of work has been done about the origin of pegmatite-type deposits, but there still exist different opinions such as the views of metamorphic origin and magmatic crystallization differentiation origin. As to the mineralization time, however, there is only one view, that is, pegmatite and its related deposits were formed mainly at the Hercynian stage. Based on field investigation and newly obtained isotopic data, this paper presents a new opinion about the evolution history of pegmatite and its related mineralization, that is to say, rare metal mineralization occurred not only at the Hercynian stage, but also at the Caledonian and Yanshanian stages. Moreover, the intensity of mineralization became stronger and stronger with time, for most of the large-scale and polymetallic rare metal deposits such as the No. 3 vein in were formed in the Yanshanian. The Azubai rare metal-gem deposit, which is famous for the top grade aquamarine in Altay, was also formed in the Yanshanian, with a spectrum 40Ar/39Ar age of 154. 1 ± 0. 1 Ma and isochron age of 151.41±2.05 Ma. These are the first age data for gem deposits in Altay, which show a poly-episodic evolution of the rare metal deposits. The understanding that rare metal deposits may form at different stages other than the Hercynian can be helpful in future explorations.
