Magnificent Prospects and Too High Expectations:——One of the Causes of the All - round Upsurge of Cooperative Transformation of Agriculture

YE Yang-bing
In the period from the end of 1955 to the beginning of 1956, attracted by the magnificent prospects described in the Forty - Article Document Concerning Agriculture the peasants joined the high - level agricultural production cooperatives one after another with too high expectations. This was one of the causes of the all - round upsurge of cooperative transformation of agriculture. Anticipating a much higher income after joining the high-level agricultural production cooperatives many peasants were reluctant to take up non - agricultural jobs that had been very attractive to them and some peasant gave up sideline production. This indicated that, on the one hand, they joined the high - level agricultural production cooperatives of their free will. But, on the other hand, this also meant their voluntary actions were based on somewhat unrealistic anticipations and therefore were highly two-faced and blind.
