APE-MAN TEETH FROM YUANMOU, YUNNAN

Hu CHENG-CHIH
On May Day of 1965, two hominid central incisors were found by Comrade Chien Fang, geologist of a field team of the Academy of Geological Sciences, Ministry of Geology. The teeth were discovered at Sbang-na-bang,.Yuanmou ("Makai Valley") County in northern Yunnan.Associated with the teeth are a number of mammalian fossils, including those of Equus yunnanensis, Stegodon etc. which according to Comrade Cheng Zheng-wu, who has identified those fossils are most probably of early Pleistocene age as was held by the predecessors. The teeth consist of the well preserved crowns of the left and right central upper incisors with partly broken roots, which are of light grayish color and highly fossilized. Both belong to the same adult individual. The incisors are massive. The crown is flat, with widely expanded end and relatively constricted basal part. Its outline is nearly triangular instead of nearly rectangular as that of "Sinanthropus pekinensis". The buccal side is convex on the basal part but flattens toward the end of the crown. The lingual surface is deep in the middle and folded on two borders; the distal border is slightly stronger than the mesial one. The basal tubercle is prominent and is divided into three finger-like processes of different size. The one in the middle of the lingual surface is the strongest and extends almost to the incisive margin. In general, the teeth are comparable with those of "Sinanthropus pekinensis". The roots are partly preserved, being broken at the tips. They are very robust. The teeth are of large size, probably belonging to a male individual. The present specimens represent the first definite finds of fossil man of Sinanthropus type in South China. They also indicate the first occurrence of a probably late Early Pleistocene man in China. A new subspecific name Homo [Sinanthropus] erectus yuanmouensis is suggested for the materials. The subspecific name indicates the district of occurrence of the fossils.
