SOME NEW OBSERVATIONS ON THE GEOTECTONIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CHINA

HUANG CHI-CHING, JEN CHI-SHUN, JIANG CHUN-FA, CHANG CHIH-MENG AND CHANG CHENG-KUN  
1. The Chi-hsien stratigraphic section in the Yenshan region of North China is the standard section of the Chinese Sinian. The "Xiatung group" (Eo-Cambrian) of South China is wanting in Chi-hsien section. The pre-Xiatung Kunyang Group, Panchi Group, and probably also Chengehiang Group correspond to the middle and upper Sinian. The Sino-Korean Paraplatform was formed in the Lüliang Cycle, i.e., before the Sinian, while the Yangtze Paraplatform was formed in the Yangtze Cycle, i.e., before the Xiatung. Thus, the Sino-Korean Paraplatform is much older than the Yangtze Paraplatform (the difference is 800 m.y. or more). 2. The distribution of the Indosinian folds proved to be more and more widespread. Geosynclinal folds occupy the greater part of the Tibetan plateau, West Yunnan, West Szechuan and the Tsinling region. The Stmgpan-Kantze and Sanchiang fold belts constitute the main part of the Indosinian folds. The Sanchiang fold belt extends southwards to join the folds of Iudochina. 3. The authors repeatedly emphasized the polycyclicity of orogenic movements. Polycyclic orogenies are accompanied by polycyclic magmatism (formation of ophiolites, intrusion of granites, eruption of andesites) and polycyclic sedimentary formations. Such a conception is opposed to the conception of Stille and his many followers (to be named monocyclic conception). Polycyclic tectonism is the rule of the development of many geosynclines in the world. This paper explains in some detail the polycyclic orogenies and polycyclic magmatism of the Tsinling Geosyncline and the geosynclines in southern Chinghai and northern Tibet. 4. More than 40 depth fractures (deep faults) are discovered in China, most of them appear in geosynclinal fold belts, usually parallel to the latter. Others mark the boundary between geosynelines and platforms: Three types of depth fractures are distinguished: Tsangpo type, representing plate suture, and thrusting deep into the mantle; Chinshachiang type, possibly cutting through the lithosphere; Wuchuan-Ssuhui type, only cutting through the earth-crust or the sial. 5. This paper briefly explains the formation of geosynclinal folds in the Himalayan Cycle by means of the theory of plate tectonics. The Tsangpo depth fracture zone marks the plate suture between the Asian plate and the Indian plate; along this suture the latter underthrusts the former. The Great Longitudinal Valley depth fracture zone of Taiwan Province marks the plate suture between the Pacific plate and the Asian plate; along this suture Taiwan underthrusts the Pacific plate. The so-called Tethys-Himalayan type of structure is the result of the collision between the Asian plate and the Indian plate, while the so-called Pacific type of structure is the result of the collision between the Pacific plate and the Asian plate.
