THE ABUNDANCE OF CHEMICAL ELEMENTS IN THE LITHOSPHERE AND ITS STRUCTURAL LAYERS

The lithosphere is a geosphere composed of rocks and is directly situated above the asthenosphere (LVZ). It contains two parts, i.e. the crust and the LID in the upper mantle (B' zone). According to the preliminary reference earth model (PREM), contributed by A. M. Dziewonski and D. L. Anderson (1981), the average thickness of the lithosphere is 77 kilometers as a whole. But the average thickness of the oceanic lithosphere is 45 kilometers only, while that of the continental lithosphere can reach about 120 kilometers. The fundamental data used for the calculation of the whole lithosphere adopted in this paper are: area=510×10~6 km~2, mean thickness=77 kin, volume=39×10~9 km~3, mean density=3.26 g/cm~3, and mass=124×10~(18) metric tons. The whole lithosphere is divided vertically into three structural layers, these are: a) the sedimentary layer ; b) the basemental layer ; and c) the pyrolitic layer. The first two layers both belong to the upper lithospere, and the third one belong to the lower lithosphere. Their mass percentages are given as follows: a=1.4%, b=18.0% and c=80.6%. On the base of their elementary abundances, which had recalculated by the author in 1965, 1976 and 1984 (see columns a, b and c in Table 3), the abundance of chemical elements in the whole lithosphere is obtained and given in the column d of Table 3. The geochemical characteristics of the lithosphere are discussed separately with the chemical models and the distribution of trace elements in the lithosphere and its different layers. Both of them are quite different in separate Structural layers, especially in the upper and lower lithospheres (see Table 4, 5 and 6).
