Grain-Size Analysis and Genesis of Loess in the Qinling Mountains

Loess is distributed sparsely in some intermontane basins and high valley terraces and on gentle slopes in the Qinling Mountains. The granulometric analysis of the Fengzhou and Shangzhou sections show that the component particles of the loess are predominantly less than 0. 25 mm, with the content of silt (0. 05-0. 005 mm) over 60%. No particles over 0. 25 mm can be observed. The content of 0. 05-0. 01 mm particles ranges from 45. 65% to 50. 03% , which is a mode of the granulometric composition of loess, and 0. 005 mm particles remain at 28%-31%. The average grain diametre (MΦ) of loess ranges from 6. 40 Φ to 6. 61Φ. The loess granulometric composition of the Qinling Mountains is very similar to that of the Loess Plateau, showing that the loess of the Qinling Mountains is also an atmospheric dust sediment, as is the case with the loess in the Loess Plateau. It is found that during the Quaternary the dust transported by the high-altitude airflow (above 4000 m) over the Qinling Mountains moved towards the southeast and widely fell under gravity along their journey. Those dusts that fell down to the ground where erosion was weaker formed loess deposits with a continuous sequence and wide distribution (e. g. the loess deposits in the Loess Plateau). But the loess distribution is fragmentary in strong erosion regions (e. g. the Qinling Mountains). Therefore, from northwest to southeast in China, the belt-like distribution of the gobi-desert, loess of the Loess Plateau, loess of the Qinling Mountains and "Xiasu earth" in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River is a special geological landscape formed by air-currents of monsoons of East Asia during the Quaternary.
