Sedimentary characteristics of salt-bearing strata and genesis of Zhangxian salt deposit in the northern margin of west Qinling

Zhangxian salt deposit in Gansu province occurs within Neogene salt-bearing red bed sedimentary basin in the Zhangxian segment of Northern Margin Fault Zone of west Qinling.The salt layer is located in the very thick grey-grey red mudstone-marl limestone series at upper part of the basin.Analysis of the sedimentary cycle sequence and sedimentary feature and regional geological tectonic background shows that the sedimentary environment of Zhangxian salt deposit is characteristic of the salt lake facies of inland lake.The grey salt-bearing rock series of grey red-grey green mudstone,grey black marl limestone and miralilite-gypsum-rock layer is 750 mthick developed with well rhythmic sedimentary cycle and small cycle is set in big cycle suggesting that formation of the salt deposit needs not only dry-wet cyclic change but also a relative deep and large catchment area to supply the salt materials thus the salt deposit is characterized by inland lake by high mountainous deep lake.
