The relationship between the thresholds of neural response telemetry and T or C-levels for children with cochlear implant

Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide an objective method to estimate T\|level and C\|level by using NRT(neural response telemetry)thresholds for children who have difficulties responding accurately after cochlear implant surgery because they are very young or have other disabilities.Methods:Fifty four children implanted with the Nucleus C124M multiple cochlear implant system participated in this study.The software used in this study was NRT 2 04,and the hardware included computer,IF5(interface 5)card,PCI(processor control interface)and Nucleus C124M multiple cochlear implant system.Monopolar stimulation mode was used during NRT threshold measurement.Electrodes No.3,5,10,15,20 were tested.The T\|level and C\|level were obtained at the same visit.Results:Ninety two point one percentage of all the tested electrodes recorded NRT responses and threshold.All the NRT thresholds were above the T\|level.NRT thresholds were above C\|level in 31 5% of the electrodes.The mean of NRT thresholds was shown to fall between the mean of T\|level and C\|level.The correlations between NRT thresholds and T\|levels(r=0 43) and NRT thresholds and C\|levels(r=0 48)were modest but significant (P=0 0000).Conclusions:NRT technology provides a new objective method for estimating T\|level and C\|level for children who are unable to cooperated with audiologists during mapping after operation.However,considerable variability across subjects was noted.So it is difficult to estimate T\|level and C\|level accurately by testing NRT thresholds.The new NRT technology should be improved in the future.
