HU Mei-qin,ZENG Ling-xia,YAN Hong.(Department of Public Health,Medical College of Xi'an Jiaotong University,Xi'an,Shaanxi 710061,China)
【Objective】 To assess the situation of sedentary activity and its association with the prevalence of obesity among middle school students in Xi'an. 【Methods】 A total of 737 students were enrolled from three secondary schools in Xi'an by multi-stage random cluster sampling method.Body mass index(BMI) was derived from measured height and weight.Underweight, normalweight, overweight and obesity were classified with BMI cut-off points from WGOC and 2000 report on the physical fitness and health surveillance of Chinese school students'.Information about time spent on sedentary activity and sleeping was collected from students' self-administered questionnaire, while birthday and parents' information were reported by their parents. 【Results】 The total sedentary time was(5.7±2.7) hour per day, among which(2.1±1.5)h and(2.3±1.1)h were spent on watching TV and doing homework respectively. The daily sleeping time was(8.4±0.9)h.Overall 12.6% of secondary school students were overweight or obese(overweight 8.8%;obesity3.8%).In a logistic regression model, after adjusted for sex, grade, residence and parents' culture, odds ratios were 38% higher with each hour on watching TV per day(OR=1.38,95%CI:1.01~1.89).While in a multiple linear model,BMI added 0.07 kg/m2 after adjusted confounders. 【Conclusion】 Watching TV may be close associated with adolescents' overweight and obesity in Xi'an.
