Epidemic features and trend of HIV/AIDS in Liuzhou city, Guangxi province

Objective To analyze the trend and features of HIV/AIDS epidemic and provide evidence for prevention and control. Methods To analyze the data collected through routine and sentinel surveillance, as well as through epidemiological survey. The cumulative number of the reported HIV infection was 3 562, patients 366, death 65 from 1997 to 2005. The majority were the youth and middle-aged. The ratio of male to female was 3.16∶1.The main route of transmission was through IDU, occupying 93.75% to 30.92%, from 1997 to 2005, showing a significant decrease, while the number of the heterosexual transmission was increasing rapidly yearly, occupying 20.44%. The epidemic had an uneven regional distribution with clear geographic clustering.Conclusion The HIV/AIDS epidemic significantly increased at a higher speed in Liuzhou city. There was HIV spreading from the high-risk groups to the general population. Effective measures should be taken to further prevent and control HIV/AIDS.
