The Photo-oxidation of COS

The photooxidation of COS under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, has been studied in the COSO2 system. The reaction was explored through FTIR, White Cell, XPS and GCMS. The result showed that the major photooxidation products of COS under the irradiation of ultraviolet light were CO2 and SO2 in COSO2 system. SO42- was identified due to the further oxidation of SO2. The added O2 had a positive influence on the conversion of COS. With the increasing of O2, the apparent rate constants of photooxidation increased first, then the increament decreased gradually. The results indicated that the photooxidation of COS under irradiation of ultraviolet was apparent firstorder reaction. The apparent rate constant is 10-4-10-3 s-1.The experiment provides evidences for the photooxidation of COS in the atmosphere and the formation of sulfate aerosols.
