RECENT DEVELOPMENT OF CATHODOLUMINESCENT MATERIALS

The present paper reviews the recent advent of cathodoluminescent materials which include the monochromatic orange, amber and; color high-resolution phosphors for terminal display tubes for special purposes, phosphors for color TV,projection TV and gigantic outdoor video display and" multicolor and multi-persistence penetration phosphors for multifunction CRT. The important properties of energy efficiency, color and CIE coordinate, beam current saturation effect, temperature dependence, presistence and degration are stressed. "It is interesting to develop the phosphor having saturated emission color and meduim-long antiflicker presistence.A summary of old and new designations of CL phosphors for Worldwide Type Designation System(WTDS)is given in this paper. The diversity of these new phosphor screens reflects the rapidly expanding displaytechnology, particularly in the area of antiflicker and multicolor displays.The newly developed CRT screens consist of a cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG:Ce),Y3Al5Ga2O12:Tb and Y0.1Tb0.2Lu2.7Al3Ga2O12 garnets, epitaxially grown on commercially available YAG substrates. The high . luminance and high-resolution terbium-activated yttrium brthosilicate(Y2SiO2: Tb) and willemite(Zn2SiO4 :Mn)CL films which are deposited on fused silica, sapphire and glass substrates using a sol-gel mtthode are also reported recently.Finally, a novel enhancement phenomenon and energy transfer in cathodo-lumincscence are discussed.The catholuminescence of Sm3 + ,Eu3+, Yb3 +......ionsin Y2O2S is greatly enhanced by a trace of Tb3+ or Pr3+ ion. The novel enhancement effect is fundamentally different from a type sensitization process between rare earth ions. The energy transfer observed in the systems of Y2O2S: Tb,Dy,Y3Al5O12:Tb,Ce and Y3Ga5O12 :Tb,Ce for cathodolumincscence is another enhancement phenomenon which is the same as the result obtained under the excitation of UV radiaiton. These results show that phenomenon is attributed to the usual energy transfer of nonradiation resonance.
