Accumulation and Potential Ecological Risk of Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments from two Random Dumping Areas in Xiamen Seas

LIU Jie-ping,LAN Dong-zhao(Third Institute of Oceanography State Oceanic Administration,361005,Xiamen,Fujian,China)
Based on real monitoring data, the accumulation coefficients method and the Hakanson potential ecological risks method are used to analyze and assess the accumulating degree and potential ecological risks of heavy metals in surface sediments from two random dumping areas, the Wuyu area and the Xiamen harbor area. The results showed that the contents of measured heavy metals in the two areas both belong to the type I according to national marine sediments classification guidelines. To the present, the accumulating degree of these heavy metals is still low and would impose very slight threat to the safety of local ocean ecosystem, which indicates that the two sea areas can continue to be used as random dumping place.
