Investigation of Non-point Pollution in Watershed of Miyun Reservoir

Investigation of non point pollution carried out in the watershed area of Miyun Reservoir in suburban Beijing indicates three main kinds of non point source loads threatening water quality of the Reservoir: chemical fertilizer, wastes from animal husbandry and loading from soil erosion. Soil erosion in particular plays a most important role in loads of non point source. It is also found the variety of land use evidently affects the intensity of loss of nutrients and the loss of nutrients (TN and TP) in wet season account for 60% of the annual total nutrients loading. Compared with point pollution sources, which have been mostly brought under control around the Reservoir, non point pollution has constituted a prominent cause impairing the water quality. Suggestion was made in so far as soil conservation, proper use of chemical fertilizers and restrictions on poultry and livestock farms.
