Mechanism of Activated Carbon Modified by Microwave Irradiation

Microwave irradiation technology was used to modify coconut shell-based granular activated carbon(GAC)in N2 at 450 ℃.The modified and unmodified GAC adsorption capacity for toluene was measured.Results indicated that adsorption capacity of 1 g modified GAC to toluene can be improved from 182 mg to 193 mg,and breakthrough time of adsorption bed can be prolonged from 2.5 h to 3.5 h.After modification,alkali functional group content,specific surface area,iodine number and surface morphology of modified GAC were enhanced,but acid functional group content of modified GAC was less than unmodified GAC.Analysis of results and SEM photos indicated that mechanism of GAC modified by microwave irradiation can be explained from two aspects,including cleaning of holes in GAC by microwave heat enhances its physical adsorption capacity and plays a leading role while increase of alkali functional group on GAC surface by reducing atmosphere enhances its chemical adsorption capacity.
