Effect of Water Flow Regimes on Growth of Microcystis aeruginosa

Interferences of water flow on growth of Microcystis aeruginosa were studied with difference flow regimes such as continuous and intermittent flows of different velocities.The laboratory experiment conducted indicated that,compared with intermittent flow,interference of continuous flow on the algae growing was significantly detectable,and the stress reached maximum at the flow rate of 35 cm/s.On the other hand,algae growing density when affected by intermittent flow was higher than that by continuous flow,which implied that intermittent flow mainly affected the nutrient absorbing ability of algae cells.The experimental study also suggested that the continuously turbulent flow at high velocities could exert mechanical forces onto the algae damaging algal cells;and that the colony formed by Microcystis aeruginosa cells,however,produced a kind of micro-environment which was conducive to the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa.
