Effects of Simulated Acid Rain on Seedling Growth of Five Hardwood Species

Fan Houbao(Department of Resources and Environment, Fujian College of Forestry, Nanping 353001)  
Seedlings of five hardwood species had been exposed to a simulated acid rain at pH values of 2. 0, 3. 5. 5. 0, 6. 0,and to a control rain at approximately pH 6. 7,for a growing season. Significant foliar damage, declines in chlorophyll contents, and inhibition of growth, were observed at pll 2. 0, while growth was simulated at pH 3. 5. However, the direction and magnitude of effects of simulated acid rain on seedling growth varied with species and with treatment.
