THE EFFECT OF THE STERILE-CYTOPLASM OF THE WILD ABORTIVE RICE ON F_1 GENERATION

Two male sterile lines with the cytoplasm of the wild abortive rice and four fertility-restoring lines were used to create five sterile line hybrids and their corresponding maintainer hybrids, includiug three pairs of reciprocal crosses. Comparisons were made on plant heights, days of heading, maximum number of tillers, panicle numbers per hill, percentage of effective tillers, number of grain per panicle, number of filled grain per panicle, percentage of seed set, 1000 kernel weight, grain weight per hill, etc. The results indicated that the sterile line hybrids, in comparison with their corresponding maintainer hybrids, aside from their later heading periods and increase in maximum number of tiller, all other values decreased. Furthermore, the latter results all attained the levels of significant differences. In other words, the sterile-cytoplasm of the wild abortive rice showed the effect of negative hybrid vigor. The decrease in yield of the hybrid showed significant positive correlation with the decrease in 1000 kernel weight and positive correlation with the decrease in the numbcr of grain per panicle. However, through the selection of high yield and high ability of fertility restoration line and choice of the best combination, it is possible, in general, to eliminate the negative effect of sterile cytoplasm.
