METHODS OF FORECASTING CROP HETEROSIS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN BREEDING

This paper summerizes the methods for forecasting crop heterosis and the mechanisms resulted from it in the fields of heredity,physiology and biochemistry since 1960s.It sums up the progress and achievements in study- ing and forecasting heterosis by using such methods in crop breeding as the physiological active substance,the complementation of mitochondria, the complementation of chloroplasts,the analysis of isozymes,and the estimation of genetic distance.It also reviews the problems concerning with those aspects stated above.It is suggested that such comparatively aecurate and practical method in the forecast of heterosis by the estima- tion of quantitative character inheritance such as genetic distance is fea- sible and valuable.
