Cell Defense Enzymes at the Late Growing Stage of Hybrid Rice Exposed to Different Ecological Conditions

The results indicated that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in flag leaves of hybrid rice decreased as the plant aged, exposed to different nitrogen rates and photoconditions, but the reverse was true in MDA contents. Peroxidase (POD) showed its different trend. The fluctuation of slight decrease, then dramtic increase in POD activties was detected from heading to ripening stages. It appeared to have a significantly positive correlation between SOD and CAT, and showed a significantly negative correlation between the activities of the two enzymes and MDA concentrations. The dynamic property of POD activities was more complicate. It suggested that nitrogen rates and photoconditions have influences on the cell defense enzyme systems, but the different effects could be found, attributed to different enzymes concerned. Finally, the discussion was extended to the relationships between defense enzyme systems per se and heterotic manifestation in rice.
