Changes in postharvest respiration and physiological effects of Chinese olive fruits treated by exogenous ethylene

Changes in postharvest respiration and physiological effects of Chinese olive [Canarium album (Lour.) Raeusch] fruits treated by exogenous ethylene were determined. The results showed that the respiratory pattern of Chinese olive fruits belonged to climacteric fruits, the climacteric rise of respiration could be stimulated to appear ahead of the time by ethrel treatment. The activity of peroxidase and malondialdehyde content of lipid peroxidation product of Chinese olive fruits were increased by ethrel treatment, so was cell membrane permeability. It was suggested that ethrel treatment could weaken the protection of cell membrane, promote the lipid peroxidation, damage the integrity of cell membrane structure, and therefore, accelerate fruits ripening and senescence.
