Study on Adsorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution by Anion Surfactant Modified Bentonites

A modifi ed bentonites was synthesized from bentonite by exchanging with an anion surfactant(sodium dodecyl sulfonate,SDS). The properties,kinetics and thermodynamics of methylene blue from water adsorption process on modif ied bentonites were studied. The results of X-ray and FI-IR diffraction show that the modifi ed reagent is intercalated into the layers of bentonite and the spacing of bentonite layers increases from 1.04 nm to 3.52 nm. The results indicat that the relationship between adsorbing capacity(qe) and equilibrium mass concentration(ce) is in accordanced with the isothermal adsorption equations of Langmuir and Tempkin. The adsorption enthalpy and entropy changes respectively is -25.44 kJ · mol-1 and -50.74 J · mol-1 · K-1,and the adsorption exhibits spontaneous surface physical adsorption. The adsorption dynamics follows the laws of pseudo-second-order kinetics with the energy of activation is 3.34 kJ · mol-1.
