Study on Montmorillonite Intercalated by A Series of Quaternary Ammonium

The purified Na-montmorillonite from Xinjiang Jimusaer was modified with a series of alkyl quaternary ammonium salt(OCTAB, DETAB, DOTAB, TETAB, HETAB, ODTAB) in the same experimental condition to get different intercalated montmorillonite. The samples of montmorillonite/quaternary ammonium salt inserted composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrum. The effect on layer space of quaternary ammonium salt inserted montmorillonite by differnt quaternary ammonium cation chain was discussed. The result showed that the interlayer spacing of intercalated montmorillonite increased with the increment of the quaternary ammonium chain. And the layer spacing of intercalated montmorillonite inserted by ODTAB was the largest.
