Three important problems are discussed in the paper. Firstly how can we establish a dialects phonetic strata after discussing about literary and colloquial reading and then it is emphasized literary readings and readings from literary stratum, colloquial readings and readings from colloquial stratum should be distinguished. Secondly kinds of complicated phonetic strata that are concerned with literary and colloquial readings are analysed. Thirdly the relationship between readings from literary stratum and readings from colloquial stratum is discussed. At the end, it is emphasized that the opinion that literary and colloquial readings come from the coexistence of the elements which belong to defferent dialects in synchronic phonology is imperfect and that readings from colloquial stratum come from readings from literary stratum in Beijing dialect is incorrect.
