EFFECT OF VOLUME FRACTION ON TENSILE PROPERTIES OF SiCp/Al ALLOY COMPOSITES BY HIGH-PRESSURE TORSION

SiCp/Al composites were fabricated by High-Pressure Torsion.The effect of the volume fraction on microstructure and tensile properties of the composites was studied by means of microscope,tensile test and SEM observation of fracture surfaces.The results show that the volume fraction and the shear strain influence the distribution of SiC particles.The higher particle volume fraction,the lower shear strain,the less homogeneous of the distribution and the more clusters of SiC particles.With the volume fraction increasing,the tensile strength and yield strength increase,but the ductility decreases.Tensile fracture surface exist various sizes of dimples.The failure of SiCp/Al composites is of mixed mode of gliding fracture and brittle fracture.With the volume fraction of SiCp/Al composites decreasing,fracture dimples and tearing edges increase,the features of gliding fracture get more dominant.
