Research evolution on the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of nano-scale composite ceramics

Liu Hanlian, Huang Chuanzhen, Qin Huifang, Wang Suilian, Sun Jing, Zou Bin, Ai Xing (Center for Advanced Jet Engineering Technologies,School of Mechanical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan 250061,China)  
Nano-scale ceramic composites may have high bending strength and fracture toughness. The research status quo on the strengthening and toughening mechanisms was surveyed, mainly including matrix grain fining, and the transition from the intergranular to the transgranular fracture mode as well as micro crack healing in annealing treatment. The existent problems to be solved were pointed out, which may be helpful for fabricating the high performance nano-scale ceramics.
