Research on preparation of nitrogen-contained stainless steels by high-energy ball milling and sintering

The powders of nitrogen-contained stainless steels were prepared by high-energy ball milling under flowing N2 atmosphere and were subsequently cold-pressed and sintered. The variation of phases, sizes, morphologies, nitrogen contents of powders with the increasing milling time and the microstructure of sintered samples were studied. The results show that the particle sizes of powders become finer and their nitrogen contents tended to higher level with the increasing milling time, but above 4h milling, the particle sizes of powders could not be further fined and the nitrogen contents of powders increase quite slowly. The sintered body has austenite-ferrite duplex microstructures, its relative density could reach 97%, nitrogen content is (mass) 0.27% and its tensile properties are superior to those of the materials produced by high pressure melting method.
