Analyse of the interfacial reaction in WC_p/2024Al composites

12vol%WCp/2024 aluminium composites were fabricated by hot-pressing method at different temperatures,with WC powders in average sizes of 2μm and 8μm.Investigation on the interfacial reaction between tungsten carbide particles and the aluminium matrix was performed using X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry.The results show that the primary interfacial reaction produc is WAl12.But when the composite is hot-pressed at high temperature,a little amount of Al5W is formed as the interfacial reaction resultant.The interfacial reaction starting temperature of WCp(2μm)/2024Al is lower than that of WCp(8μm)/2024Al.The hardness results show that the hardness of composites increase after interfacial reaction by nearly 50%.
