Expression of serum VEGF in hepatocellular carcinoma

Bo Lin,Wu Yongming,Yin Yanru (Department of physiology,Branch campus of the First Military Medical University,Guangzhou 510315)
Objective To evaluate the expression of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in Hepatocellular Carcinoma(HCC) Methods Serum specimens of 70 HCC,30 hepatocirrhosis and 20 healthy control were included in this study ELISA was used to detect VEGF level of samples quantitatively The results were evaluated in terms of clinicopathologic characteristics of HCC Results The serum VEGF level of HCC group was significantly higher than that of hepatocirrhosis patients( P 0 05) and that of controls( P 0 001) The level of serum VEGF was strongly associated with tumor size( P 0 05) Serum VEGF showed a significant elevation in patients with necrosis in tumor, remote metastasis, recurrent HCC and TNMⅢ?Ⅳ stages( P 0 05) Conclusion It is suggested that detection of serum VEGF might provide a new marker for tumor diagnosis and a predictor of progression, metastasis and prognosis
