Economic Growth,Social Development and Son Preference:A Perspective from Governance

Based on data from China Population Censuses in 1990 and 2000,1% Population Sample Surveys in 1995 and 2005,this study adopted the hierarchical linear model for analyzing the relationships among economic growth,social development and son preference.The results indicate that a higher level of economic growth and social development helps address the problem of imbalanced sex ratio at birth.However any improvement on addressing the problem has been checked by the practice of son preference.The study concludes with policy proposals for improving ways of governance on addressing the problem of imbalanced sex ratio at birth,and possible limitations of such policy approaches.
