YANG Xue-yan1 LI Shu-zhuo2 GONG Yi3(1.2.3.School of Public Policy and Management,Centre for Gender and Development Studies and Institute of Population and Development at the Xi'an Jiaotong University,Xi'an 710049,Shaanxi Province,China)
Based on data from China Population Censuses in 1990 and 2000,1% Population Sample Surveys in 1995 and 2005,this study adopted the hierarchical linear model for analyzing the relationships among economic growth, social development and son preference. The results indicate that a higher level of economic growth and social development helps address the problem of imbalanced sex ratio at birth. However any improvement on addressing the problem has been checked by the practice of son preference. The study concludes with policy proposals for improving ways of governance on addressing the problem of imbalanced sex ratio at birth, and possible limitations of such policy approaches.
