Intertextuality: The Literary Origin of History——Hayden White's Anti-essentialist Historical Poetics

DONG Xin(Department of Chinese,Foshan University,Foshan 528000,China)
By extending the "literariness" to the historical field,Hayden White put forward the idea that historians' reflection of the past was "literary" and history was full of literariness. In the factors of historical literariness,Hayden White strongly stressed intertextualaity: He tried to realize the fusion of literariness and history through deconstructing history, leaping over the textual dividing line and constructing historical texts. He discovered that the process of historical structure was essentially the process of literature' birth and dissemination. He concluded that historical texts' final effect was represented as the unlimited proliferation of literary meaning of historical texts.
