He Xiwen Li Hong Shi Huiming (Department of Chemistry, Nankai University)  
Factor analysis has been used as a powerful tool for determining the number of components that contribute to the absorption spectra of multicomponent systems. How to use such an approach for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of mixture is described. Rank analysis showed that there were three components present in the mixture(Ni, Cu, Zn), This technique was also applied to data concerning mixtures of four components(Ni, Cu, Zn, Co), We concluded that sample components were present since each component acts as a factor, The nine statistical criteria were employed to reach this conclusion. Each of these criteria requires an exact knowledge of the experimental error. Model data are used to illustrate the behaviour of these functions. The method has been applied to problems of interest to chemists, involving nuclear magnetic resonance, absorption spectroscopy, mass spectra, etc.
