The present method is based on the result that in a medium of 0.30—0.45M HC1 both tungsten(Ⅵ) and molybdenum(Ⅵ) form soluble coloured ternary complexes with phenylfluorone in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, The molar absorptivities were 9.2×10~4 at 515.0nm for the W complex and 1.1×10~5 at 524.0 nm for the Mo complex. W and Mo were determined in the same solution by measuring the absorbance difference between 534.5 and 515.0, 507.0 and 524.0 nm, respectively. The calibration graphs were reetilirear for 0—1.4μg ml~(-1) of W and 0—0.7μg ml~(-1) of Mo. The method can be used to determine W and Mo in several alloy-steels without any preliminary separation. The relative errors were 0.19 to 1.5% for W and O to 4.95% for Mo, and the coefficients of variation (n=5) 0.90 to 2.8% for W and 0.50 to 5.4% for Mo.
