Colour Reaction of Multicomponent Complexes of Heteropoly Acids With Basic Dyes——IX, Ethyl Rhodamine B-Molybdenum-germanium-heteropoly Acid-Polyvinyl Alcohol System

A method for the determination of germanium is developed based on the sensitive colour reaction of ethyl rhodamine B (ERB )-molybdenum-germanium-heteropoly acid-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) system. The optimum conditions are as follows: [HNO3] = 0. 60 mol/L, [MoO42-] = 1.25×10-2 mol/L, [ERB]+ = 9. 1×10-5 mol/L and 0. 12 % PVA. The apparent molar absorptivity of the ion-associate complex is found to be 3. 8×105 L · mol-1 · cm-1 at 584 nm. Beer' s law is obeyed in the range of 0 to 1. 5 μg/25 mL for Ge( Ⅳ ). The colour of aqueous solution is stable for at least 2 h. The molar ratio of Ge( Ⅳ ) to ERB+ in ion-associate complex is established to be 1:4 by three methods. Infrared spectra show that an ionic bond occurs between ERB+ and [Ge(Mo3O10)4]4-, and that the structure of the dye molecular is not effected by the formation of the ion-associate complex. Germanium in ginseng can be determined by the proposed method with satisfactory results.
