Synthesis of Bis[4-(α-Naphthylazo)salicylidene]-o-phenylenediamine and Its Fluorescence Quenching Reaction With Copper Ions

A new fluorescent reagent bis[4-(α-naphthylazo)salicylidene]-o-phenylenediamine (BNASPD) has been synthesized. The reagent exhibited a maximum of fluorescence emission spectrum at 435 nm. The reaction could form a complex with copper ion to cause its fluorescence quenching. The reaction showed high selectivity and sensitivity for copper. A new spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of trace copper using this reagent has been developed. The detection limit for copper has been found to be 1.0 ng/mL. The method has been used to determine trace copper in inorganic chemicals and mineral water samples with satisfactory results.
