Colour Reaction of Chromogenic Reagent Benzothiazolyldiazoaminoazobenzene With Mercury(Ⅱ) and Its Application

The synthesis of a new reagent benzothiazolyldiazoaminoazobenzene and its chro- mogenic reaction with mercury (Ⅱ) ion was reported. In a weak alkaline medium, the reagent reacts with mercury(Ⅱ) to form an orange-red complex of component ratio 2: 1. The absorption maximum of the complex is at 520 nm and the apparent molar absorptivity is 1. 51×105L·mol-1·cm-1. Beer's law is obeyed for mercury (Ⅱ) in the range 0-1. 2 mg/L. This method is employed to determine trace amounts of mercury(Ⅱ) in waste water with satisfactory results.
