Determination of Cation-exchange Capacity in Clay [Co(NH_3)_6]~( 3+) Exchange Method

Co(NH 3) 6] 3+ is a stable complex ion. It can exchange with all exchangeable cation in clay and its maximum absorption wavelength is at 474 nm. Using [Co(NH 3) 6] 3+ as exchange ion, the cation exchange capacity(CEC) of clay was determined by spectrophotometry. The results showed that exchange equilibrium could be reached in 7 h at room temperature ,pH=7~8 and in 3 h at 80℃. The free metal ions and nonclay codeposited with clay did not affect the determination of CEC. The results obtained by using this method is consistent with that of the method of NH 4Cl.
