Determination of Ultra-trace Amounts of Selenium in Environmental Samples by Sequential Injection-Hydride Generation-Nondispersive Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry

A computer-controlled dual syringe sequential injection system for the determination of total inorganic Se by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) using tetrahydroborate reluctant is described. An argon flow delivered the selenide produced into the flame of an AFS instrument, and no hydrogen flow was used to support the flame. The optimum conditions for improving sensitivity and detection limit were examined, including the concentration of hydrochloric acid in carrier and in sample solutions, the concentration of tetrahydroborate, and injection time for completing total reaction process and the flow rates of carrier and shielding argon gas. The oprimum parameters for the method were 1.2 mol/L HCl in carrien, 3 mol/L HCl in sample, 1.2 mL sample volume, 0.7 mL 1.5% NaBH 4, 8.0 s injection time, an Ar flow rate of 300 mL/min for carrier, and 700 mL/min for shielding gas. Linear calibration graphs for Se concentrations between 0.25~10 μg/L were obtained. The relative standard deviation for eleven replicate analyses was 1 0% for 2 μg/L Se. Detection limit (3σ) was 0.02 μg/L of Se for 1.2 mL sample volume. A frequency of 80 samples/h (240 injections) was achieved. The method was validated by means of two reference solid materials with good agreement with the certified values.
